The junior high school English textbooks published by the People’s Education Press(referred to as the PEP Edition),as the most important and basic teaching resources in the junior high school English education,reflect the dual characteristics of the instrumental and humanistic nature of English language education and teaching.As a political concept,the influence of western countries in politics,economy,ideology and culture should not be underestimated.As the official textbook for students to learn English,the image of western countries presented in the English textbook for junior high school of the PEP Edition will have a great impact on students’ basic views,impressions and attitudes towards western countries.Therefore,the image of western countries in the English textbooks for junior high schools of the PEP Edition is indeed a field worthy of our study and discussion.This paper is divided into four parts and eight chapters.According to the following writing logic:The first part is the introduction,which includes the raising of the question,the relevant research of English textbooks,the research design and ideas.This part clarifies the issues to be discussed in this study and defines the core concepts involved.Introduce the research status at home and abroad as well as the research entry point found in this study.It further clarifies the objectives,basic research ideas and research methods used to achieve the research objectives.The second part is the basic introduction of the English textbook for junior high school.After combing the publishing background,components,basic characteristics and writing ideas of the English textbook for junior high school of the PEP Edition,this part determines the analysis and research tasks of the next part based on the actual situation of the textbook and the corresponding research methods.The third part is from Chapter 3 to Chapter 5.These three chapters mainly discuss and analyze the connotation of the image of western countries presented in this set of textbooks from the dimensions of political image,economic image,cultural image and their subdivisions,and make corresponding interpretation and evaluation.The fourth part includes Chapter 6 and Chapter 8.It mainly discusses the analysis and interpretation of the previous part,and puts forward the conclusion of this study and reflection on relevant research.According to the research reflection and conclusion,we put forward targeted suggestions and opinions on the compilation of the English textbook for junior high school and the daily education and teaching of teachers and students.
