Art exhibition builds a communication and exchange platform for art creators and connoisseurs. As the highest level and most authoritative official exhibition in China, the National Art Exhibition held every five years has a great social influence. The study of national art exhibition can probe into the aesthetic trend of thought, creative idea and artistic development trend in a certain period. The 9-13 National Art Exhibitions held from 1999 to 2019 reflect the artistic exploration and pursuit of many excellent freehand flower and bird painters over the past 20 years, and to some extent,it is also the epitome of the development of contemporary freehand flower and bird painting.By studying freehand flower-and-bird painting in the past five national art exhibitions,we can explore the creation trend of contemporary freehand flower-and-bird painting under the guidance of the mainstream ideology of society. The article is divided into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the general situation of freehand flower-and-bird painting in the past five national art exhibitions based on the background of The Times since the reform and opening up.The number and proportion of freehand flower-and-bird paintings in the recent five national art exhibitions are counted, sorted and summarized,as well as the regional differences presented. The second chapter classified the creation orientation of freehand flower-and-bird painting in the recent five national art exhibitions. The artists in the National Art Exhibition are firmly confident in their national culture, open and inclusive, and follow the two paths of inheriting tradition and integrating China and the West.Through their works, they convey the concepts of themselves and The Times, and open up artistic conception to highlight the vigorous beauty and feelings of great power. The third chapter uses the image analysis method to make a specific study of the works and analyzes the innovation of freehand flower-and-bird painting in the past five national art exhibitions. In the past five national art exhibitions, freehand flower-and-bird paintings have further developed in subject matter, enriched objects of appreciation and reflected contemporary urban life. The formal language is more abundant: it adopts dense composition and creates a grand sense of beauty through large images and dense composition.Four representative artists of the art exhibition are selected: Zhou Jingxin,Xing Shaochen,Jiang Yixiang and Qiao Yinan, and the personalized characteristics of their ink language are analyzed. The use of Western painting language such as external light, light and shade to color, color is full of tension.Block surface modeling breaks the tradition of line modeling. There are also new breakthroughs in painting materials and texture techniques. In the last five national art exhibitions, there are many problems such as the lack of "writability" and the lack of painting emotion.Looking forward to the future of freehand flower-and-bird painting, contemporary freehand flower-and-bird painters should face the challenges, root in tradition and life, and dare to change.Under the guidance of social mainstream ideology, the recent five national art exhibitions of freehand flower-and-bird paintings are mostly small freehand paintings with large picture size and image, focusing on specific details of objects, highlighting visual expression and strong production. It shows a trend towards decorative and realistic direction. The picture pays attention to the sense of form, the modeling is rigorous and somewhat artistic, and the basic skills of freehand painting performance are insufficient. There is a strong sense of modern composition in the schema, which weakens the lines and strengthens the block surface, ink color and texture. At the same time, many problems reflected in the exhibition also show the decline of contemporary freehand flower and bird painting.
