As global warming intensifies,the Arctic sea ice is gradually melting,so the possibility of opening an Arctic shipping lane is increasing.The Arctic region has become a new frontier for international political games due to the changes in the natural and geopolitical environment,and is drawing increasing attention from all over the world.Against this background,the author has selected as the target text for this translation practice a comprehensive monograph by Russian scholar Vladimir Fedorovich Pecheritsa,entitled The Open Arctic in World Politics and International Relations.The monograph,published by Far Eastern Federal University Press 2021,systematically describes the status and role of Arctic openness in world politics and international relations,as well as the Arctic strategies of major countries with or without Arctic territories.It provides reference for our involvement in the Arctic region,for strengthening our Arctic presence and for enhancing our future competitiveness in the Arctic.This paper is a translation practice report that studies and analyses the translation process of the first chapter of the monograph The Open Arctic in World Politics and International Relations.The genre of this monograph belongs to the scientific style,which aims to convey scientific information,clarify laws and principles and summarise methodological knowledge.Based on the main linguistic and rhetorical characteristics of the genre,the author makes comprehensive use of the Scopus-theory and Komissarov’s translation theories,and focuses on the specific application strategies of the translation theories with detailed case studies,focusing on achieving communicative equivalence between the translation and the original text.The report consists of an introduction,a body and a conclusion.The introduction gives an account of the background,relevance,research objectives and innovation points of this report.The main text is divided into five chapters.Chapter 1 outlines the main contents of the original text and the practical significance of the chosen topic;Chapter 2 analyses in detail the stylistic features of the text at the lexical,lexical,syntactic and rhetorical levels;Chapter 3 expounds the relevant contents of the Scopus-theory and Komissarov’s translation theory;Chapter 4 combines the translation examples with the translation methods of lexical conversion,grammatical conversion and lexico-grammatical conversion to achieve maximum consistency between the translation and the original in terms of content and structure.Chapter 5 summarises the experiences and shortcomings of this translation practice and proposes principles to be followed when translating such texts,as well as some thoughts on improving the translation quality.The concluding section summarizes the significance of the Scopus-theory and Komissarov’s translation theory in guiding this translation practice,explores the characteristics of Russian scientific texts,and summarizes strategies for translating such texts,providing some references for translators.
