Variation And Invariance: A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Arctic: What Everyone Needs To Know(Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Variational Translation Theory

In recent years,global warming,climate change and resource development have brought various threats and challenges to the Arctic.If people want to protect the ecological environment of the Arctic,they must understand the Arctic region.The Arctic:what everyone needs to know describes the ethnic,environmental,resource,political,future development and other aspects of the Arctic,so the author of the report selected and translated the Chapter 3(“Arctic Homelands”)of this book,hoping to help more readers understand the ecological environment of the Arctic,thereby enhancing people’s attention to environmental issues.Taking some long sentences in “Arctic Homelands” as translation cases,the author of the report intends to explore the application of adaptation techniques in the translation of English long sentences at the three levels: words,phrases and sentences from the perspective of Huang Zhonglian’s variational translation theory.The main basis for determining the adaptation techniques is the variation characteristics of the source contents and forms.Therefore,the author of the report selects four adaptation techniques,namely:adding,deleting,editing and altering,based on the type,contents,language characteristics of the selected text and the research direction of the author of the report.The reason for discussing the translation of long sentences is that English sentences often pursue perfection in form and have various and complicated structures,with long sentences as the main body.The translation of long sentences has always been the focus and difficulty in text translation.And how to effectively translate long sentences is a problem that we must consider.This report mainly uses these four adaptation techniques,namely: adding,deleting,editing and altering,to transform sentences,taking into account the characteristics of Chinese language expression and thinking mode,and generates a Chinese translation that is easy for readers to understand.These four adaptation techniques have their own principles of use and scope of application.The flexible use of adaptation techniques will help the efficient transmission of information in the source text and maximize the use value of the source text.At the same time,it is also of great significance to optimize the quality of the translation,save translation costs and improve the reading efficiency of the target readers.
