How to Stop Overthinking written by Chase Hill is a popular science book about psychology,which introduces causes,performances and harms of overthinking,and the ways to address overthinking through seven steps.This book is of great significance and value to improve people’s mental health.The language is alive and fluent,and this book are scientific and entertaining.The present translation task is based on Step 1,Step 2,and Step 3 of How to Stop Overthinking.In the process of translation,the translator finds that there are a large number of adverbial clauses in the selected contents.These clauses are diverse and their positions are free,making them difficult to understand and translate.Based on classic translation theory of Skopos,the translator analyzes features of these clauses,and summarizes four translation methods by case analyses so that the adverbial clauses in the source texts can be translated into Chinese appropriately.The four methods are linear translation,adjustment of clause order,conversion translation and comprehensive translation.By referring to the four methods can the translator achieve the purpose to educate the public by ensuring the Chinese translation to transmit information as exactly as possible and to conform to the Chinese expressions.Through the translation practice,the translator gains much experience and hopes that the translation methods of adverbial clauses can provide some references for popular science.
