A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Tuinaology Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Approach

Guided by the basic theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine,Tuina is a therapy that takes advantage of manipulation application to prevent and cure diseases.Due to its simple operation,wide indications,sound treatment and health care effect,Tuina has outstanding advantages.In recent years,with the strengthening of international exchanges and cooperation,as a theoretical condensation of Tuina,Tuinaology has gradually attracted the attention of the world.However,there are still insufficient studies on Tuina translation.Meanwhile,the phenomena of non-standard terminology translation and westernization in translation exist,which have affected the foreign communication and exchange of Chinese medicine culture.In this aspect,this translation practice takes Tuinaology,a textbook for higher education of TCM,as the source text.This textbook not only covers basic theory and clinical manipulation of Tuina,but also integrates the latest academic trends with research progress in this field.The completion of its English version is of significance both for practical application and theoretical research in this area.Tuina teaching materials belong to information-based text,which requires the accurate expression of the basic information from the original text along with the efficient transmission of TCM culture in the translation.The core idea of Newmark’s communicative translation approach is to seek for “communicative translation”.It focuses on the reader’s response,makes the source language subordinate to the target language and target language culture,and tries to make the translation effect as close as possible to the source language.In order to achieve this effect,communicative translation will adjust the structure and characteristics of the original text without destroying the semantics,so that the translation can be easily accepted by readers both in content and in language form.Under the guidance of communicative translation approach,the author explores the translation methods with specific cases from lexical,syntactic and textual levels.At the lexical level,transliteration,literal translation,literal translation & transliteration and free translation are adopted to explore the translation of Tuina manipulation terms,acupoint terms,meridian terms and other words.At the syntactic level,voice conversion,flexible use of sentence patterns,inversion,splitting and reorganization are used.At the textual level,in order to achieve cohesion of the sentence,some cohesive devices like conjunction,substitution,ellipsis and repetition are employed.In the meanwhile,to realize coherence of the meaning,strategies such as amplification,adaptation,literal translation and free translation are adopted.It can be seen from this report that communicative translation approach has strong applicability to the translation of Tuina texts.Through the application of communicative translation approach,in the aspect of lexical words,we can accurately convey words information,enrich the choice of words and reflect the diversity of language.In the aspect of syntax,the inner connection between each component of the sentence is sorted out to ensure better understanding of the sentence meaning for readers.In the aspect of text,the passage is well organized,and the logical relationship between contexts is clear.By carrying out a thorough research in Tuina texts,this paper tries to provide some references and inspiration for the future translation of Tuina texts.
