A Report On The Translation Of An Anthology Of Classical Chinese Short Stories In The Ming-Qing Period (Excerpts)

The world today has witnessed an increasing exchange of different cultures in the context of globalization.Cultures are colliding with each other and merging with each other.In order for Chinese culture to participate equally in world cultural dialogue,it has become imperative for Chinese culture “going out”.Under the call of“going out”,more and more people have been involved in the foreign translation of Chinese literature in recent years,and the number of publications has increased year by year.However,the domestic translation boom has failed to realize the popularity of these translated works.This means that China’s C-E translation activities are in urgent need of adjustment,and a comprehensive translation system needs to be established.This,coupled with the interest,spurs the translator to take An Anthology of Classical Chinese Short Stories in the Ming-Qing Period as the source text of the translation practice,and to explore some skills and methods of avail for the translation of Chinese short stories based on the schema theory.Schema theory holds that humans come to know the world based on schemata that already exist in their minds.Only when the new information is related to the prior schema can the schema of the new information be constructed.This theory plays an important guiding role in translation practice.In the process of translation,the translator needs to activate the relevant schemata of the two languages and then reconstruct the language according to the schematic divergence,so as to produce a translation that is acceptable to the readers of the target language.This translation report focuses on how to correctly decode the schema of the source text and construct the schema of the target text from three aspects: linguistic schema,contextual schema and cultural schema,with a view to providing some enlightenment to the translation activities of classical Chinese tales.
