The report is based on the E-C translation of Shaping Femininity: Foundation Garments, the Body and Women in Early Modern England,a social science text published in 2022 and written by Sarah A.Bendall.Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 are chosen as the material for translation, which mainly introduce various kinds of foundation garments which help women in early modern England to shape their femininity and people’s views on such garments. The source text is a social science text, which is characterized by careful wording and complex logical relations. The complex logical relations in the social science text need to be realized by a large number of grammatical cohesive devices.Effective cohesive devices are helpful for readers to fully understand the meaning and coherent effects of the original text. Therefore,Cohesion Theory is chosen to guide this translation practice so that the same coherent effect can be achieved in the target text.It is found that there are an enormous number of references in the source text. The fact that those references contain both literal meaning and referential meaning leads to more difficulties in this translation practice.Given that there are many differences between references in English and Chinese, the translator needs to consider how to deal with references in the source text to improve the readability and fluency of the whole translation. Therefore, the translator hopes to gain more experience on how to cope with references in English.Different methods are chosen to deal with different classifications of references.According to the classifications of references put forward by Hasan and Halliday, references in the source text can be divided into personal references, demonstrative references and comparative references. To cope with references in the source text better, five translation methods are selected, including omission, repetition, specification, addition and conversion. All of these methods are conducive to achieve readability and fluency.
