The translation material of this report is Bidding Document for the Purchase of Emulsion Equipment for Global Intelligent Mask Production Base(Technical Bid),a technical bidding document commissioned by Suzhou At Pack Machinery Co.,Ltd.This report, under the guidance of Reiss’ s text typology theory, analyzes in detail the problems encountered in the translation practice based on specific cases and provides solutions, with a hope that it can shed some light on the translation of similar informative technical texts. The report is composed of five parts.Chapter One serves as a description of the project,in which the translation background and the research significance are discussed.Chapter Two is an introduction of the pre-translation preparation, including parallel text consultation and glossary compiling. The text typology theory is also elucidated in this chapter.Chapter Three makes an analysis of the source text’s features from three levels: lexical level, syntactic level, and discourse level. The extensive use of mechanical terms, abbreviations,as well as long sentences with complicated structures and subjectless sentences are considered difficulties to be resolved in the translation.Phrase structures and diagrams are also frequently used in the technical bid.Chapter Four exemplifies the problems encountered in the practice from the above-mentioned three levels, followed by a summary of translation techniques targeted at those problems, including literal and free translation, omission, conversion, division and reconstruction.Importance should also be attached to such discourse elements as phrase structures and diagrams. The last chapter is a conclusion and reflection of this translation practice. The technical bidding document,as is analyzed in this report,is an informative contentfocused text, the translation of which shall follow an audience-centered approach and ensure the accuracy and conciseness in message conveyance. At the lexical level, most technical terms can be literally translated, with free translation serving as a complement.Abbreviations with Chinese explanations and certain category words are supposed to be omitted to avoid repetition and redundancy. At the syntactic level, division and reconstruction can be employed to deal with long and complicated sentences.Non-subject sentences, meanwhile, can be translated through voice conversion. At the discourse level, the correspondence between text and diagrams as well as the consistency of phrase structures are of necessity in ensuring a quality translation.
