Listening and speaking competence is very important in practical conversation and The English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High Schools(2022 edition)has higher requirements for junior middle school students’ listening and speaking competence: requiring students to understand and express their meaning in a specific context.At present,the focus of Chinese junior middle school English class is still inclined to the training of students’ reading and writing competence.Improving students listening and speaking competence and changing the teachers’ teaching way meets the requirements of the new English curriculum standard.Shadowing exercise requires trainers to follow the audio to retell the content and finally achieve the improvement of listening and speaking ability.Relevant studies at home and abroad have proved that Shadowing Exercise has a high improvement in the listening and speaking competence of language learners.This study is based on the existing research findings of scholars on the shadowing exercise,and combines the Input Theory and Behaviorism Theory to study the impact of the application of teaching on students’ listening and speaking.In junior middle school English listening and speaking class,students’ interest in learning English is stimulated by selecting interesting and practical training materials in English.Therefore,this study combines the shadowing exercise with the English listening and speaking teaching in junior middle school,and aims to solve the following three problems from the perspective of empirical research:1.How can the Shadowing Exercise be effectively combined with Input Hypothesis and behaviorism?2.How can a class be created that incorporates a shadowing exercise to hone speaking and listening competence?3.What are the effects of shadowing exercise on booster the level of listening and speaking teaching and learning situation?This paper takes 96 students from grade two classes of a middle school in Bazhong Sichuan Province.The experimental study lasted for three months.Before starting experiment,questionnaires,listening and speaking test papers were distributed to students of two classes,and junior middle school English teachers were interviewed to understand the current situation of English listening and speaking learning and the attitude of teachers and students towards English listening.Secondly,the shadowing exercise is applied to the junior middle school English listening and speaking class.Finally,SPSS was used to compare and analyze the test results of the two experimental classes and the control class before and after the experiment,and six students at different levels of the experimental class were interviewed to investigate the students’ satisfaction with the application of the shadowing exercise in listening and speaking teaching and learning.The author finally came to the conclusion that shadowing exercise can be effectively combined with the Input hypothesis theory and Behaviorism theory as a listening and speaking training method.By changing the speed of repetition in the process of shadowing at a fixed time of day can effectively improve students’ listening and speaking competence.Specifically,the standardization of students’ pronunciation and intonation,the increase of the understanding of the general idea of the exercise materials,the improvement of the integrity of the original text,and the enhancement of students’ interest in listening and speaking training.Therefore,the author believes that the application of shadowing exercise to junior middle school English listening and speaking teaching can effectively improve students’ listening and speaking competence.It is expected that the research results can make teachers and students in a middle school in Bazhong pay attention to the importance of listening and speaking teaching,and have a better application of the shadowing exercise.Furthermore,hoping this result has certain reference significance for relevant research.
