| This report was based on the author’s internship at Shanghai Zhenyou Technology Co.Ltd as a translation proofreader.During the internship,the author participated in the translation project for the UPEACE China Center and was mainly responsible for proofreading the English-to-Chinese subtitle translation of their international politics course video.The critical issue in translation proofreading is to ensure high quality and on-time delivery of translation results.The content of the source video was international politics.The source language subtitles were not provided and the speakers were from all over the world.Its target audience was the UN online course learners.The client’s requirements were to ensure the accuracy and consistency in the rendering of terminologies,to pay specific attention to the features of subtitle translation,and to make the translation easy to understand.Therefore,the difficulties in this project mainly included the translation of proper nouns and terms,the handling of style and language structures,and speech recognition.Formulating the translation quality assessment(TQA)criteria for the project is the key to quality control.With the theory of "faithfulness,smoothness,and elegance" as the theoretical basis,the TQA criteria for this project were determined as fifty points for "faithfulness",including faithfulness to the original semantics,style and function;forty points for "accessibility",i.e.conveying the original meaning in accurate language;and ten points for "elegance",i.e.the wording of the subtitles and viewability.Based on the typical cases in proofreading and the evaluative feedbacks on the proofreading results given by the client,the translator and the proofreader(which is the author),it can be seen that the TQA criteria proposed in this study can effectively reflect the translation quality of the target text type,and help identify and solve most of the problems in translation.This study can provide a reference for subtitling similar types of texts. |
