Reading is the most basic method of cognition in modern human society and is the most important means by which people acquire information.For high school students,reading is an important way to improve students’ comprehensive language skills and plays an important role in listening,speaking,reading,writing and reading.However,there are still some problems that need to be improved in the teaching of English reading in high schools in China.The current method of teaching English reading is still predominantly lecture-based.Teachers dominate the classroom too much,and students passively accept learning.This not only ignores students’ interest in learning and their own development,but also makes reading teaching ineffective.In response to the current problems of a single teaching method and students’ low interest in reading,this paper applies the PAD Class Model to high school English reading teaching,hoping to open up a new path.The PAD Class Model is a new teaching model proposed by Professor Zhang Xuexin of Fudan University in 2014.The core concept is to allocate half of the classroom time to the teacher for lecturing and the other half to students for interactive learning in the form of discussion.This teaching model provides a clear separation of teaching time into three processes,namely presentation,assimilation and discussion.The key innovation is the staggering of presentation and discussion,allowing students some time for independent learning and assimilation of knowledge.Originally designed for universities,this new teaching model is gradually being extended to primary and secondary schools.The aim of this study is to investigate the current situation of teaching and learning English reading in Grade 1 of Dongguan No.1 senior high school,and to explore whether the PAD Class Model can improve high school students’ interest and performance in English reading.This research focuses on answering the following three research questions:1.What’s the current situation of English reading teaching and learning of Dongguan No.1 Senior High School?2.What effect does the PAD class model have on improving students’ English reading interest?3.What effect does the PAD class model have on improving students’ English academic reading performance?In this study,108 students from two parallel classes,class A and class B,in grade1 of Dongguan No.1 senior high school,Guangdong Province,are selected as the subjects for a three-month study on the application of the PAD class model.The experimental class(class A)is taught English reading using the PAD class model and the control class(class B)is taught English reading using the traditional English teaching model(PWP teaching model).The research instruments used in this study are: questionnaire,interview,and reading test.This study uses SPSS data analysis software to analyze the data from the pre-test and post-test questionnaires and pre-test and post-reading tests,and analyzes the results of the pre-test and post-test interviews.Through interview with teacher and questionnaire of students,the current situation of English reading teaching and learning in Dongguan No.1 senior high school is as follows: PWP mode is used in all classes;students have low interest in English reading,and students have less reading strategies.After three months of the research,the results of questionnaire and interview for students find that the PAD class model can increase students’ interest in English reading;Through the comparative analysis of the tests results,it can find that the PAD class model can effectively improve students’ English reading performance.
