English reading is one of the five skills that students need to master when learning English,and it is also one of the important methods for students to obtain information from the outside world.In the new college entrance examination,the reading score accounts for one third of the total score.The new English curriculum stresses that teachers should change the traditional outdated teaching methods,which lead to students’ loss of interest in English learning,and weak autonomous learning ability.In English reading teaching,teachers should encourage students to acquire knowledge actively through the process of exploring and experiencing by themselves.Inquiry-based teaching method(referred to as IBT in the text)pays more attention to the principal position of students,In particular,the 5E(engagement,exploration,explanation,elaboration,and evaluation)model which is one of the IBT can give full play to the enthusiasm of students’ active learning,and encourage students to obtain knowledge by independent thinking and exploring,which contributes to develop students’ autonomous learning ability.This paper takes 117 students from two classes of grade 3 in the No.2 senior high school of Huangzhong district as the research participants.The time of the experiment is the second semester of 2022.The experiment lasts for a total of 4 months.This paper mainly discusses the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of English reading of students in Huangzhong No.2 Senior high School?(2)What is the effect of inquiry teaching on improving students’ interest in English reading and students’ autonomous learning ability?(3)What effect does inquiry teaching have on improving students’ English reading performance.During the experiment,Class 2 and Class 3 were randomly named as control class and experimental class.The control class used the conventional method,while the experimental class uses the inquiry teaching method for English reading teaching.In the early and late stages of the experiment,the author adopted the test,questionnaire and interview,and used SPSS version to analysis the data.Through analysis,it can be found that there are differences in the influence of the experimental class and the control class on English reading before and after the experiment.Thus,it can be concluded that inquiry-based teaching can enhance students’ interest in English reading,improve students’ ability of autonomous learning,and meanwhile,it contributes to improving students’ reading performance.Therefore,the inquiry-based teaching has an significant meaning for future English reading teaching.
