| High school English textbooks have some problems with the representations of Chinese culture, which cannot meet the demands of The Curriculum Standard.Taking the Yilin version(2019 edition)as an example, there are many deficiencies in the representations of Chinese culture.Firstly, the frequency of Chinese cultural representations in textbooks is not enough. Then, the coverage of Chinese cultural representations in textbooks is incomplete. On the one hand, some basic and important Chinese cultural representations are missing;on the other hand, the coverage of some commonly used topics is not complete.Thirdly, the English expressions about Chinese culture in the textbook are poor. For example, several words used are inaccurate, some collocations are not authentic, and many sentences are confusing. The Curriculum Standard requires students to learn the culture presented in the text, including Chinese culture. Therefore, textbooks need to rely on texts to introduce, tell or transmit knowledge of Chinese culture. In this way,the students’ understanding towards Chinese culture can be deepened, and the requirements of The Curriculum Standard for students to spread Chinese culture and tell Chinese stories well in English can be fulfilled. However, under the circumstance that teachers do not supplement relevant readings and students cannot find external materials by themselves, the above-mentioned quantitative and qualitative problems in Chinese cultural representations in the current high school English textbooks will affect high school English teaching. Therefore,in response to the demands of The Curriculum Standard, solutions should be put into practice.Teachers are supposed to select suitable reading texts for students. The scholars and editors working for high school English textbooks should increase the quantity of Chinese cultural representations and improve quality of the relevant English expressions. |
