| Nowadays,with the rapid development of informatization,many countries have translated publicity materials to increase their influence in the world.In the past decades,China has become eager to tell its own story to the rest of the world as it gradually integrates itself into the international community,so there is an increasing need of presenting compelling China stories.Under the circumstances,China Daily Hunan Bureau steps up efforts to launch English news websites to update vivid stories of Hunan every day and let the voice of Hunan be heard by the rest of the world.The author joined an English translation project of Hunan local news while working as an intern at China Daily Hunan Bureau.She has translated over150,000 Chinese characters.The translation report takes Hunan local news that the author translated as the corpus.She introduces the process and the outcome of the project,analyzes the texts and mainly classifies them into three types,namely news about economy,news about society,and news about tourism.In addition,she summarizes their features respectively and analyzes the difficulties that she encountered in translation.In case analysis,the author elaborates on the translation strategies,methods and techniques that she has adopted when translating different types of news.At lexical level,she applies back translation,Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and the methods of literal translation,transliteration,and liberal translation to deal with jargon,words related to policies,culture-loaded terms,and four-character words.In this case,target readers can not only understand the meanings of the words but know the cultural connotations of some words of local color.At syntactic level,she mainly adopts the technique of division to deal with the translation of long sentences with rich information;applies addition to reveal the subject of non-subject sentences;uses omission to translate flowery sentences and sentences with parallel structures to emphasize key information.At discourse level,she adds some connectives to strengthen the connection of some paragraphs;makes adjustments when translating the news stories of photos and those recommending scenic spots to help readers understand them quickly;applies omission to deal with long titles,so as to enable readers to get information easily.In a word,translators should always be responsible for what they translate in the process of translating news.Besides,they need to make full use of all the available resources to understand source text and apply different methods to translate different types of news.In addition,they are supposed to learn from previous experience in time so as to improve their skills of translation.To sum up,with the analysis of the translation difficulties and specific solutions,the report aims to provide suggestions to other translators who want to be engaged in local news translation and contribute to presenting compelling local stories to the rest of the world. |
