This paper takes Arnold Schoenberg’s(1874-1951)chamber music "Fantasy for Violin and Piano"(Op.47)as the research text, and makes an in-depth study on the series techniques used in the work. This work is a representative of Schoenberg’s late mature series works.Although it is short,it contains very rigorous technical content, which is as impressive as Schoenberg’s other relatively large string trio and quartet. The work is based on the series combinative technique, showing the composer’s extraordinary logical yet strong emotional composing style. In the introduction, the paper outlines the reasons for the choice of topic, the current state of research in China and abroad, the research methodology,Schoenberg’s life and the background to his work.In the first chapter, the structural characteristics of the series and the combinative structure of the series are revealed by analyzing the subsets of the series. The second chapter analyzes the arrangement of series, the division and arrangement of the twelve-tone areas and the layout of series. The third chapter examines series pitch organisation techniques, analyses the way series are presented and discusses the use of set in the work using "pitch-class set" analysis. The conclusion provides a high level summary of the text, revealing the work’s rigorous twelve-tone series technique based on the combinative technique, while at the same time having a fantastically free musical character.
