A Report On The C-E Translation Of An Academic Paper On Energy Science And Environmental Engineering

This is a report on the translation of an academic paper in the field of energy science and environmental engineering.In addition to some of the common features of Chinese academic papers,the source text has also the following features: The theoretical part is highly professional in formal language and with long and complex sentences;the argumentation part consists of the process of explanation and reasoning,mostly formula reasoning and result analysis,the language of which is not as complex as the theoretical part,but it is highly logical,including formula calculation,experimental charts and reasoning results.The author of the source text hopes to exchange his research results in an academic conference,so he puts forward high requirements for the quality of translation.In view of the difficulties in the translation task,the author of this report(AR)adopts Professor Huang Zhonglian‘s variation theory as guidance.The translation variation refers to the translation activities in which the translator,in accordance with the special needs of specific readers under specific conditions,uses such variation techniques as amplification,omission,edition,narration,condensation,combination and rewriting to help the potential target readers acquire the relevant contents of the original work.These translation activities refer to the eleven types of translation activities such as extracting,compiling,describing,reducing,synthesizing,commenting,evaluating,retranslating,interpreting,translating,writing and referring.In this translation project,the AR flexibly adopted these translation strategies and means of variation,and ensured a comparatively high quality of translation.This translation report is an analysis,summary and reflections of the whole translation practice.In the early stage of translation,the AR studied the translation variation theory of Professor Huang Zhonglian,and used it as the guiding theory for the translation project after assessing the applicability.The report first introduces the translation project and its related background,then analyzes the source text and assorts the potential difficulties and the translation process.Supported by the translation variation theory,the AR analyzes the translation variation process from the macroscopic perspective.Macroscopically,the process of variation translation includes the process of interaction between such elements as the translator,the original work,the translation work and the potential readers.The AR mainly analyzes the translation variation process through three aspects: the variation from the original text to the translation,the adaptation techniques and variation methods adopted by the translator,and the reasons for selecting specific adaptation techniques.In the specific case analysis section,the AR makes a detailed case analysis of the seven adaptation techniques and11 variation methods of the variation theory used by her in this translation project.Through this translation practice and the writing of this translation report,the AR believes that the translation variation theory can provide theoretical guidance for the translation of academic papers,thus expanding the scope of application of the theory and also inspiring translators to try other texts with this theory.The AR hopes to provide some suggestions and inspiration for translators of other academic papers.When they encounter similar translation difficulties,they can also flexibly resort to translation variation strategies to faithfully and accurately convey the information of the original work.
