The translator was entrusted by “Chengdu One Building One Story Cultural Communication Co.,Ltd” to the project which includes two competition announcements and a judge agreement,totaling 11,000 words.The source texts belong to informative and vocative text in terms of the text type and its target readers are institutions and individuals outside China in the design industry.The requirements of the client are as follows: The translation needs to be accurate and to attract as many applicants as possible.The translator searched parallel texts before translation.She had a better understanding of the style and features of the source texts during the process of translation and revised the target text after translation until they were accepted by the client.Newmark’s communicative translation attempts to produce on its target readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the source texts.Communicative translation is applicable to the translation of informative and vocative texts.The competition text is about the information on the design competition,aiming to call for large participation,so the source texts belong to the informative and vocative text.Therefore,based on the difference between the competition text and its target text,the translator explores how to achieve the communicative function of the competition text under the theoretical guidance of communicative translation.Through analysis for the source texts,the lexical and syntactic difficulties can be concluded.Lexical difficulties include the translation of modal verbs,markers of rhetorical devices,legal expressions,and titles,while the translation of non-subject sentences and long sentences make up the syntactic difficulties of the source texts.Then how to address these lexical and syntactic difficulties in the competition text is analyzed under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation.The translated text aims to convey the content of the competition text accurately and arouses readers’ interest,thus achieving the communicative function of the source texts.The translator hopes translation techniques and methods concluded from the case analysis would provide a reference for Chinese-English translation of competition texts,or other informative and vocative texts.
