As a concept that is frequently mentioned in many classics in the pre-Qin period, name helps us understand some concepts such as "Tao","language","debate","righteousness","etiquette and regulations".It also plays a significant role in exploring the language and thoughts in the pre-Qin period and dealing with language abuse and moral decline in contemporary society. The thought of name in Chuang Tzu,with rich implications,is an important part of thoughts of name in the pre-Qin period. The research on the thoughts related to name should not just focus on "don’t worry about right and wrong" and "no name".This study, based on the thought of name in Chuang Tzu,consists of five parts, aiming to explore the meaning of name and to analyze the meaning of name in Chuang Tzu.The introduction part interprets the research value of the thought of name in Chuang Tzu,introduces the current research on it,defines the object of study, and points out the research methods,so as to clarify the differences between research on the origin as well as significance of the name thought in Chuang Tzu and research on logic in ancient China.Chapter One displays the texts and meaning of name in Chuang Tzu.Beginning from the relationship between name and Tao,this paper introduces some concepts like "debate","language","righteousness","etiquette and regulations".It interprets different meanings of name in Chuang Tzu:(1)the original meaning of name: name in Chuang Tzu consists of“having name” and “no name”,both of which are related to Tao(self name).Another kind of name is factitious name, which is a fake one criticized by people and has nothing to do with Tao(hypocritical name).(2)The linguistic meaning of name: name in Chuang Tzu is not only Tao’ s judgment of the world(the real debate)but also Tao’ s expression of the world(the real language),which is different from the debate and language in our daily life.(3)The social and ethical significance of name: righteousness, etiquette and regulations have their superficial name, essential name, and they become artificial names after being publicized.Chapter Two discusses the main ideas of name in Chuang Tzu:(1)Metaphysics:having name helps us find the distracted Tao in the daily phenomenon, and then enter the state of “no name”.We further comprehend the in-depth metaphysical Tao,and navigate both metaphysical and metaphysical worlds where name and Tao are connected with each other.(2)The thought of cognition: we can detect the real name existed in distracted phenomenon through having name, and then connect “no name" with "having name".Words means no words, and arguments means no arguments.(3)Ethical and political thoughts: name deconstructs many kinds of authorities in society.Since everyone has his or her own morality,he or she has "name" and "no name".The latter one serves as the basis of the former one.Name embraces the idea of coming naturally, making “no name” and“having name” unified in individuals so that they can live in society according to their temperaments.Chapter Three explains the origin and development of the thoughts of name and analyzes the name thoughts in other classics in the pre-Qin period, such as Tao Te Ching,Mozi,The Works of Kung-Sun Lung-Tzu,The Analects of Confucius,Xunzi and Han Feizi, which are representatives of different schools in different periods. These thoughts further clarifies the characteristics of equality and zhenuineness of name in Chuang Tzu.Chapter Four comments and analyzes the thought of name in Chuang Tzu and illustrates its value and dilemma: Chuang Tzu breaks the logic game of justifying name by the way of name but falls into the trap of name.
