| The implementation recommendations of the newly promulgated English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education in 2022 mention that English teaching should emphasize listening and speaking and imitation.The TPR teaching method can help students practice their listening and speaking skills through imitation.By combining language and movement,the TPR teaching method can develop students’ language skills and language use in practice,and it can improve the effectiveness of English classroom teaching.James Asher,the founder of the TPR teaching method,showed that learners can express their understanding of a second language through body movements.It can help them to increase their interest in learning a second language.With the development of education in the new era,TPR teaching method has not been eliminated by the times.On the contrary,its fervor continues to rise.Therefore,based on the theories related to the TPR teaching method,this study identifies the problems that arise at the present stage of elementary school front-line teachers’ teaching using the TPR teaching method.It also proposes corresponding countermeasures to make the TPR teaching method more in line with the trend of English teaching reform and promote students’ English core literacy.This study begins with a brief description of the causes of the selected topic,the significance of the study and the research method.It also compiles the definition of the concept of TPR teaching method and the current status of research at domestic and abroad through literature review.Secondly,this study sorts out the theoretical basis of TPR teaching method and establishes the cornerstone for the proposed countermeasures later.Then,this study analyzes the specific application of TPR teaching method in primary English classroom.This study designed a questionnaire on the current situation of the application of the TPR teaching method in elementary school English classrooms,taking into account the teaching practice of S elementary school in Wuhan.The questionnaire was selected from 269 students in the school to participate in the survey and to understand students’ first feelings about the TPR teaching method from various aspects.Subsequently,a teacher interview outline was prepared and one-on-one interviews were conducted to understand teachers’ attitudes toward TPR teaching method and the problems encountered in using TPR teaching method at different teaching ages.For example,"teachers lack relevant theories and there are many shortcomings in teaching","students’ personalities are different and their participation in class is not comprehensive","the TPR teaching method has limitations and needs to be integrated and innovated with other teaching methods",and "when teaching online,there is not enough experience in applying the TPR teaching method".Finally,on this basis,several case studies were selected for analysis.The study proposes specific countermeasures to improve the TPR teaching method,including "Strengthening theoretical learning to improve teaching literacy","Reflecting on teaching design to ensure the integrity of teaching steps","Creating a relaxed and pleasant classroom atmosphere to ensure the participation of all students in the classroom","Integrating other teaching methods to reflect the innovation of TPR teaching method",etc.This paper provides some teaching insights for elementary school English teachers to use the TPR teaching method. |
