The Tea Horse Ancient Road is a historical pathway that played a vital role in the transportation of tea and horses. It encompassed two primary routes, namely the Yunnan-Tibet Line and the Sichuan-Tibet Line, serving as an ancient international trade route connecting the southwestern region of China, specifically Sichuan and Tibet as well as Yunnan and Tibet. This renowned road has preserved a wealth of important cultural heritage along its course.Among them, the Qionglai section of the Tea Horse Ancient Road is located in the western Chengdu Plain. It serves as a crucial intersection on the Sichuan-Tibet and Sichuan-Yunnan highways within the Tea Horse Ancient Road’s Sichuan-Tibet Line.Currently, there are a total of 38 cultural heritage sites in this area, mainly classified into five categories: ancient road ruins, ancient tea gardens, ancient post stations, temples, and cliff carvings. These cultural heritage sites continue to play an important role to this day.Through the compilation and analysis of various historical records, local chronicles, and other resources, research methods such as documentary research, field investigations, comparative studies, and inductive analysis have been employed to systematically and comprehensively investigate the historical and cultural heritage of the Qionglai section of the Tea Horse Ancient Road. The research approach focuses on categorizing the survey results from the perspective of ancient site classification and conducting comparative analysis of typical heritage sites in the Qionglai section of the Tea Horse Ancient Road, utilizing interdisciplinary approaches.Firstly,in-depth investigations and analyses were conducted on the general overview of the natural and cultural aspects of the Qionglai section, the evolution of tea-horse trade, and the current status of historical and cultural heritage.Secondly,a comparative study was conducted on the typical heritage sites in the Qionglai section of the Tea Horse Ancient Road.Among them, the Qiong Kiln and paper mill sites highlight the advantages of the Qionglai section of the Tea Horse Ancient Road compared to other ancient roads.Local products such as Qiong bamboo and Qiong liquor have experienced development through the utilization of the Tea Horse Ancient Road.Lastly,a research analysis was conducted on the significance of the historical and cultural heritage of the Qionglai section of the Tea Horse Ancient Road. The existence of this cultural heritage profoundly influences the politics, economy, and culture of the Qionglai region. The well-connected ancient road transportation network has facilitated the economic development of the Qionglai area and has advanced ecological civilization in the region.Furthermore,it has enriched the local folk culture and contributed to its prosperity. The existing historical and cultural heritage represent the continuity of culture. The Qionglai region, with its favorable natural conditions and cultural environment, has facilitated the development of a well-established ancient road transportation network. The trade along the Tea Horse Ancient Road has facilitated frequent communication between Qionglai and various ethnic minority groups, leading to economic prosperity and cultural diversity in the Qionglai region. It has earned Qionglai the reputation of being the “foremost state for incoming visitors from the south” in the “Land of Abundance”.The origin of tea and Qionglai should be deeply explored, and ecological civilization should be promoted through the protection of ancient road sites and the construction of tea gardens to promote economic development and achieve a win-win situation for culture and the economy.
