| Reading is a key factor in language learning.Effective English reading teaching can improve students’ comprehensive language application ability. The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)puts forward requirements for students’ English reading ability, that is,they can understand, read and tell simple stories with the help of pictures. Therefore,English reading teaching in primary schools should not be limited to the practice of language points, but should focus on the cultivation of students’ reading ability.A large number of Chinese and foreign studies have shown that English picture books,as a useful supplement to English textbooks, can improve students’ reading ability and improve their reading attitude.Based on the Multiple Intelligence Theory, this study combines the Input Hypothesis and Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory to explore the impact of English picture book reading teaching on primary school students’ English reading achievement in rural areas, and to investigate changes in students’ attitude toward English reading. The research questions of this study are as follows:(1)What are the effects of English picture book reading teaching on rural primary school students’ English reading achievement?(2)What are the changes in rural primary school students’ attitude toward English reading after English picture book reading teaching? The experiment was conducted at Shitangwan Central Primary School in Wuxi, which is a rural school. The students’ family economic condition is relatively poor compared with other urban schools in the same region.Students have fewer opportunities to attend extracurricular learning. The research subjects are two parallel classes in Grade 4.One is Class 2 Grade 4,the other is Class 5Grade 4.The two classes were divided again when the students in the third grade upgraded to the fourth grade. So they had similar academic levels. In the four-month experimental study, the teacher conducted English reading teaching with English picture books as the main reading material in EC,while CC was taught reading passages.According to the Multiple Intelligence Theory, the teacher designed diverse teaching activities in both classes to develop students’ multiple intelligence and improve their reading attitude.First, before the experiment,a pre-test was conducted to test whether the reading achievement of the students in both classes were similar.Next,pre-questionnaire were distributed to EC to understand students’ attitude on English reading. At the same time, five students from both classes were interviewed to see their attitude on English reading.During the four-month experiment,EC learned English picture books, while CC learned passages. After the experiment,a post-test was conducted to test whether there was a significant difference in reading achievement between the two classes. And a questionnaire was distributed to EC again to see whether students’ attitude toward English reading had changed. The two classes were interviewed again to show their attitude on English reading. Finally, data statistics and analysis were performed with SPSS 26.0.The research shows that in the reading test, the reading achievement of the experimental class students has been significantly improved, while that of students in the control class has been slightly improved. There is a significant difference in reading performance between the two classes.English picture book reading teaching can improve rural primary students’ reading achievement.Secondly, the questionnaire results show that the use of English picture books in English reading teaching can improve students’ attitude toward English reading. Finally, the interview results indicate that teachers can design diversified teaching activities with the help of English picture books to help students learn how to read and understand reading materials better. At the same time, students can analyze pictures and complete reading tasks. This research has a certain enlightenment on the application of English picture books to English reading teaching in rural primary schools. In rural primary schools, most students learn English through textbooks.Teachers can choose English picture books to carry out English reading teaching.Secondly, teachers can design diverse activities to cultivate students’ multiple intelligence, enhance their reading interest, and promote their reading attitude. Finally, teachers should guide students to read the words and pictures in picture books and improve their reading ability. |
