A Report On The Post-editing Of The Machine Translation Of Refractory Material Selection For Steelmaking(Excerpt)

This paper is the report on the practice of English-Chinese translation of excerpt from a book Refractory Material Selection for Steelmaking written by Tom Vert,an expert in the field of steelmaking,and the book was published in 2016 by John Wiley & Sons,USA.It is classified as science and technology information text.The translation practice adopts machine translation and post-editing(MT+PE)mode to achieve quality control of the translation with the help of post-editing.This report analyzes the problems encountered in machine translation and how to solve them through post-editing,discusses the advantages and disadvantages of machine translation and the importance of post-editing,and summarizes the advantages of the machine translation and post-editing model using the “Comprehension,Expression,Adaptation”(CEA)framework.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One introduces the translation materials,the translation model of machine translation and post-editing,and the overall structure of the report.Chapter two introduces the whole translation process.The author used Google Translate to do a preliminary translation of the original text,and then edited it for the problems.Chapter three introduces the CEA framework adopted in this translation practice report.Chapter four analyzes the problems encountered in the process of machine translation and how to solve them through posttranslation editing based on the CEA framework.In the comprehension stage,the author gains the understanding of the original text by referring to materials,connecting to the context and consulting experts.In terms of expression,the translation conforms to the language habits of the readers from the aspects of professional expression,passive sentence translation and cohesion.In terms of adaptation,the author effectively transmits the information of the original text by means of addition and omission.Chapter five summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of machine translation and the importance of post-editing.With the continuous development of machine translation,its speed and efficiency are far superior to human translation.However,there are still some problems in machine translation,such as lack of understanding of professional knowledge and context,inconformity with stylistic and linguistic features and unclear logic.The translator can analyze the text type and contextualize the information and produce a translation that conforms to the text type characteristics of the target language and the language expression habits of the readers through postediting.
