A Report On The C-E Translation Of The General Theory Of Chinese Water Culture(Excerpt)

Water is the source of human civilization,and culture is the blood and soul of a nation.Water culture is an important part of economic development and social construction.As a book of Chinese water culture series,The General Theory of Chinese Water Culture is quite readable for its latest interpretation of Chinese water culture,and achievements of the theoretical research and practical application of water culture in the past decade.In this report,the translator selects the first two sections of Chapter 6 of The General Theory of Chinese Water Culture as the source text for translation.This chapter mainly introduces the cultural construction in the implement of water engineering,such as integrating culture into water conservancy planning and cultural design of water engineering.Nowadays,as water resources and environment is facing a quite severe situation,it is necessary for translators to convey our country’s attention to water culture and its great significance to the world to make our efforts in water culture education and communication to be known by the world,and to promote water culture research to a higher level by spreading water culture in the world.This report is composed of four chapters.The first chapter is introduction of translation background.Chapter two mainly introduces the translation process.The third chapter introduces translation theory adopted in the translation.The fourth chapter is the main part of the report,which analyzes the typical examples in the translation process from three aspects.Firstly,the translation of specialized terms,four-character words and verbs are analyzed at the lexical level.Secondly,at the sentence level,it introduces the translation of long and difficult sentences,sentences without subject and Chinese verses.Finally,at the textual level,it introduces transformation of coherence and cohesion in the text according to the target language reader’s thinking.The last chapter is the translator’s summary,including gains and limitations in the process of translation.Guided by Skopos theory,the translator tried to adopt literal translation,free translation,conversion method,inversion method and other strategies to achieve the purpose,coherence and fidelity of the translation.Translated works of water culture under the guidance of Skopos theory can spread Chinese water culture to the world,which is an effective way to promote cultural transmission.
