Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties is a comprehensive interpretation and commentary on the Wen Xuan’s poems by Wu Qi of the Qing Dynasty.Wen Xuan is a collection of works based on the criterion that "things are done out of contemplation, and righteousness is attributed to literary grace".Wu Qi discussed the poetry of the Wen Xuan in terms of a traditional Confucian edification stance, and attempted to raise the status of the poetry of the Wen Xuan with his own discourse. In this book,Wu Qi presented a macro view of literary history and a specific and in-depth analysis of the poets and works in the Anthology, with many insightful comments.Starting from Wu Qi and Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties, this paper analyzes the profile of the man and his book, and explores the ideological basis behind it,its theoretical origins, the poetic views it exhibits, and the significance and influence of the book. The introductory section focuses on the purpose and significance of the study, the main content and framework of the study, and the current status of the study. The first chapter introduces Wu Qi’s personal life and an overview of the Six Dynasties Selected Poems. The main contents include Wu Qi’s life, the background of the period, and the title and layout of Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties. This part of the study lays the foundation for an in-depth exploration of Wu Qi’s poetic thought.Chapter 2 explores the ideological foundations of Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties. The stock of knowledge that Wu Qi exhibits in Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties is tremendously refuted.First,in that he always took the Confucian classics as his guiding principle when he expounded his poetic ideas, including the theories of The Book of Songs,The Book of Changes, and the Analects of Confucius;and secondly,in his commentary,he showed the concept of mutual evidence of poetry and history,he often drew on and quoted from history in terms of content and methodology.Chapter 3 attempts to reveal the theoretical origins of Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties. This book mainly absorbed the poetic ideas of Wen Xuan,Zhong Rong’s Shi Ping and poetry theories of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. He was most influenced by the poetics of Wen Xuan in terms of his esteem for five-word ancient poems and aesthetic tendencies, and he cited the views of Shi Ping and various early Qing dynasty poetry theorists to support his own comments.Chapter 4 analyzes the poetic thought of Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties.Wu Qi based his poetic ideas on his own Confucian poetics in order to give a proper name to the poems of the Wen Xuan.In this process,Wu Qi clearly demonstrated his poetic-historical thought of respecting The Book of Songs and Wen Xuan, his poetic-typical thought of taking the poetic style in line with the "Han Dao",and his poetic-religious thought of having an idea but not a rhetoric.Chapter 5 introduces the significance and influence of Verdict on selected poems from Wen Xuan of Six Dynasties.Although this book was not widely circulated and documented at that time,it actually contributed to the development of the early Qing dynasty’s "Selected Poems" scholarship and injected new content into the theory of the grammatical school.Wu Qi’s poetic thought influenced the later Qing scholar Li Diaoyuan and the Republican scholar Huang Jie.
