| In the new era and context,China has new requirements for middle school English classrooms, and core competencies have also proposed new directions and goals for the development of middle school English speaking ability. The "New Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education English(2022 Edition)" clearly states that students in grades 7-9 should be able to describe, summarize, and communicate in English with clear and semantically coherent themes. The pronunciation and intonation should be basically correct, the words used in the discourse should be appropriate, and the sentence structure should be correctly understood. However, due to the lack of clear and unified measurement standards and the current situation of emphasizing written tests over oral tests in the context of Teaching to the test, the current situation of dumb English still exists. Therefore,it is crucial to help junior high school students and English teachers understand the current situation of students’ English speaking ability and the factors that affect it,in order to effectively help students improve their English speaking ability. In view of this, this study is based on input-output theory and information processing theory, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.Through oral tests, questionnaires, and interviews,it investigates the current situation, existing problems, and factors affecting junior high school students’ English speaking ability. The study selected three different schools in Ankang City, among which 36 junior middle school students were randomly selected for oral test, and scored according to the language ability level 3 standard of the New English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022)Edition and the national public English test(PETS)level 1 oral standard;Secondly,198 junior high school students were selected for a questionnaire survey, and 180 valid questionnaires were received. In order to further understand the current situation and influencing factors of students’ oral English, six teachers were selected for interviews. The research results indicate that the overall level of English speaking ability among junior high school students has not yet reached the standard. In the oral test questions, junior high school students have good oral fluency and accuracy, but students from underdeveloped areas still need to improve, and students from all three schools need to strengthen their learning and practice of oral complexity. The lack of teaching philosophy and professional quality, students’ oral learning habits, emotional factors, and language environment are important reasons that affect the oral ability of middle school students. In order to improve and enhance the current situation of English speaking among junior high school students in the city, this survey will propose the following suggestions: firstly, teachers need to change their traditional teaching concepts and continuously improve their professional qualities, creating a relaxed and enjoyable learning environment for students in the classroom to alleviate their anxiety in oral learning;Secondly, students themselves should change their understanding of learning for "further education",strengthen the learning of basic language knowledge, and develop good oral learning habits; Finally, schools and families should form an educational synergy to jointly promote the improvement of students’ oral proficiency. |
