A New Deal for Cancer is an introduction to the process, current situation and prospects of the fight against cancer in the US over the past 50 years which documents the redeeming features of the process and the impact of various government policies on cancer treatment. It also points out many problems. The excerpt examines the evolution of cancer treatment in the US,raising the issue of inadequate health insurance coverage and the high price of cancer drugs.Despite being a popular medical science text,it includes many professional terms and complex sentences with a lot of information.Consequently, how to translate professional words and information accurately are the key problem.Popular medical science texts aim to publicize basic medical knowledge to the public rather than to provide professional treatment plans. So the translator can adopt flexible translation methods according to the content of the text. This report sorts out and analyzes the translation process and the translation. The report summarizes the characteristics of the text, the difficulties and solutions of the translation from the three aspects of lexical, syntactic and textual.Besides,it discusses the methods of the Chinese translation of popular medical science texts and the equivalence of medical translation.Through the translation practice, the findings are as follows.First, the Functional Equivalence Theory is of practical importance for the translation of popular medical science texts.Second,in order to achieve the equivalence between the original text and the target text, different translation methods such as amplification, omission, addition and recombination should be flexibly used to deal with different linguistic phenomena in the original text. Finally, the use of repetition, connection, substitution and other cohesive devices can enhance the logic and coherence of the translation and improve the translation quality. It is expected that the findings mentioned above can provide a reference for the translation research of popular medical science texts.
