In the 2011 edition of the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education,higher requirements were put forward for reading teaching.In English teaching,teachers should actively guide students in reading extracurricular English books,combining the graphic and textual content of the reading books to facilitate students’ deepening of reading comprehension,thereby improving students’ reading and listening abilities,and further achieving the goal of enhancing students’ oral expression ability.In addition,the standard also requires students’ language expression ability,that is,they can re express the content in their own language organization based on their understanding of the text content.This process can cultivate students’ good English reading habits and also has new requirements for reading teaching.However,due to the influence and limitations of traditional concepts and teaching conditions,developing English reading teaching in primary school still faces difficulties and challenges.Therefore,in order to achieve the expected goals of English reading teaching,it is necessary to explore methods to enhance students’ interest in English reading and conduct research on methods to improve students’ reading ability.These are all issues that must be taken seriously in modern English reading teaching.English picture books have rich images and text,which attracts students to the fun of the story when reading picture book stories,and can meet their psychological needs of exploring the world.This article analyzes the role played by picture books in English reading classrooms,aiming to study the practical application value of English picture books.At the same time,aiming at students’ English learning,it studies how to adopt teaching methods that can effectively stimulate their interest,improve their initiative and intrinsic motivation to learn English,cultivate their love for English and reading,and ultimately achieve the goal of improving primary school students’ autonomous reading ability.Through action research,this paper explores the role of English picture books in the teaching of advanced English reading in primary schools.The research object of this article is the fifth grade class taught by the author,with a total of 52 students.Before the beginning of teaching action research,the author made a series of analysis and investigation on the current situation of English reading learning of senior primary school students.In the implementation stage of teaching action research,the author applied picture book teaching in English reading teaching.This research action consists of three rounds.The main objective of the first round is to enhance students’ interest through picture book teaching,encourage them to love reading,actively engage in reading,expand their horizons,and stimulate students’ cross-cultural awareness;The second round of research aims to improve the teaching methods of picture books and cultivate students’ good thinking qualities and correct reading habits;The third round of research effectively integrates English textbooks and picture books to improve the quality and effectiveness of students’ English reading.In this study,the author combines qualitative research and quantitative research to collect and sort out data as a whole.By using SPSS analysis,it was found that students’ reading test levels have been effectively improved.Through questionnaire survey and interview analysis,it was concluded that students’ English reading proficiency and reading thinking have changed.The research results of this paper provide practical methods and suggestions for English reading teaching in primary school.Firstly,English teachers need to guide students to actively read and provide them with appropriate positive feedback encouragement,in order to form students’ scientific and systematic reading thinking.Secondly,apply picture books to unleash their effectiveness and cultivate students’ emotions.Finally,in the process of teaching picture books,it is necessary to provide reasonable guidance plans to enable students to innovate their thinking,enrich their language knowledge,and improve their learning abilities.
