Mobile phones bring us an efficient life experience, promote information exchange, and provide a platform for expression. However, uncontrolled use of mobile phones has far exceeded people’s normal psychological needs and brought negative impacts to individuals. As the end of 2022 approaches, with the gradual relaxation of policies related to the epidemic, various aspects of people’s lives and the surrounding environment have changed compared to before the epidemic. The topic of this study is to discuss the differences and similarities in people’s mobile phone usage and sense of emptiness before and after the epidemic.Until now, there has been no relevant research to verify the strength of the relationship between excessive use of mobile phones and college students’ feelings of emptiness, time efficiency, and self-determination motivation. Therefore,Study 1 attempts to evaluate the correlation strength between the four variables through meta-analysis,Study 2 used a questionnaire survey to verify the chain mediating effect of self-determination motivation and emptiness between mobile phone overuse and emptiness,Exploring the status and characteristics of college students’ sense of emptiness, providing reliable evidence for the relationship between excessive use of mobile phones, personal characteristics, and mental health in the future.Research method:1.Meta analysis conducted a preliminary search of relevant literature through a Chinese and English literature library, with a search date set before October 1,2011.After Endnote exclusion and manual screening,a meta-analysis was conducted on 15 articles.2.The empirical research uses the "College Student Smartphone Addiction Scale","College Student Emptiness Questionnaire","Time Management Disposition Scale",and "Chinese Version of College Student Learning Self-determination Motivation Scale" as research tools.Through the online distribution of questionnaires through Questionnaire Star,545 questionnaires were ultimately collected.Using self-determination motivation and temporal efficacy as mediating variables, this study investigates the relationship between excessive use of mobile phones and feelings of emptiness. The data analysis used SPSS 26.0 to conduct reliability analysis on the questions included in the four scales, followed by descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and t-test.Model 6 in PROCESS macro plugin is selected for mesomeric effect test.Result: 1.After screening,meta-analysis included 9727 college students, and we found a positive correlation between smartphone addiction and self-determination,emptiness,and time efficiency among students(self-determination:summary r=0.20,95%CI=0.17-0.22,P<0.001.emptiness:summary r=0.21,95%CI=0.18-0.23,P<0.001;Time efficiency : summary r=0.08,95%CI=0.06-0.10,P<0.001).2.The results of empirical research are as follows:(1)In terms of place of residence, there are significant differences in the time efficacy of college students, and the time efficacy of college students living in cities is significantly higher than that of college students living in rural areas;in terms of gender and the demographic variables of whether they are only children, college students spend too much time on mobile phones. There were no significant differences in use,self-determination motivation, time efficacy, and emptiness.(2)There is a correlation among excessive use of mobile phones, time efficacy and emptiness.Excessive use of mobile phones was positively correlated with emptiness, negatively correlated with amotivation in self-determination motivation, positively correlated with extrojected regulation, introjected regulation, and identity regulation, and negatively correlated with time efficacy.Time efficacy was negatively correlated with emptiness, positively correlated with self-determination motivation, and positively correlated with amotivation, extrojective regulation, introjective regulation, stimulation pursuit, knowledge pursuit, identity regulation, and achievement pursuit in self-determination motivation.Self-determination motivation was negatively associated with feelings of emptiness.(3)Excessive use of mobile phones positively affects feelings of emptiness, amotivation, extroverted regulation, introjected regulation, and identity regulation, and negatively affects time efficacy.Self-determination motivation positively affects time efficacy, and negatively affects emptiness.Time Efficacy negatively affects feelings of emptiness.(4)Excessive use of mobile phones can affect the feeling of emptiness through self-determination motivation, and it can also affect the feeling of emptiness through time efficacy.(5)The study verified the chain mediating effect of self-determination motivation and time efficacy between excessive use of mobile phones and feelings of emptiness. That is to say,the excessive use of mobile phones can affect the sense of emptiness through the combined effect of selfdetermination motivation and time efficacy.
