A Report On The Translation Of Making A Living In The Middle Ages: The People Of Britain 850-1520 (Chapters Eight To Ten)

This is a translation report on the English to Chinese translation of the book,Making a Living in the Middle Ages: The People of Britain 850-1520.From the perspective of economic and social history,the book tells readers about medieval British life in an objective,professional and refined style.In order to improve the professionalism and readability of the translated text,the author has taken the Skopos Theory as the theoretical basis and applied the three principles of the Skopos Theory to translation practice.In the report,the author has analyzed 29 typical cases in translation practice in detail.By comparing the first draft with the final draft after the supervisor’s revision,the author has summarized the key and difficult points in translation practice and put forward the corresponding solutions.In the translation practice,proper nouns,long sentences and compound sentences,and discourse cohesion are the key and difficult points of translation.At lexical level,with the help of professional dictionaries,online resources,parallel texts and other translation tools,the author has used the methods of adding footnotes,in-text annotations,literal translation,concrete translation,and amplification to supplement the medieval cultural background knowledge implied in the source text in time,which helps target readers better understand the history of the Middle Ages.At syntactic level,in order to overcome the differences in sentence structure and internal logic between English and Chinese,the author has adopted the translation methods of linear translation,adjustment of word order,conversion of voice and division to improve the readability of the translated text.At discourse level,the author has used grammatical and lexical cohesion to produce a fluent version and fully display information and discourse style of the source text.The translation of texts about economic and social history will help Chinese readers understand the social life of medieval England,especially the changes in economic life.In addition,under the guidance of the Skopos Theory and its three principles,the report introduces the translation methods adopted in the process of translation practice,hoping to provide reference for future translation and research on other texts of the same type.
