Preparation is crucial to the accomplishment of an interpreting task and significantly impacts the interpreter’s performance. This thesis summarizes the definition and classification of preparation for interpreting and illustrates its importance from a cognitive perspective. The thesis is a case study based on the mock conference “What will the future of driving look like”,which adopts a retrospective perspective to analyze the inappropriateness and inadequacy of the author’s preparation in three aspects: longterm preparation,short-term preparation, and on-site preparation. The author discusses the influence of preparation on the output of Chinese-German simultaneous interpreting and finds that insufficient preparation lowers the accuracy, completeness, and fluency of interpretation. In the last part of the thesis, the author proposes some strategies to improve interpreters’ preparation work and suggests that interpreters build a complete preparation system from three dimensions: long-term,short-term,and on-site preparation,so as to be better qualified for interpreting.
