In order to find a suitable reading teaching method for students, this paper used Oxford’s classification of learning strategies and O’Malley’s and Chamot’s classification of specific learning strategies, mainly having memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social strategies,to design a questionnaire and study the use of Chinese reading comprehension strategies of 50 students, coming from the three batches(2014,2015 and 2016)and taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Chinese Language Teaching under the Confucius Institute. This paper used the reading part of a Chinese Proficiency Test(HSK)level 5 to test the students’ reading proficiency which has been the basis in dividing them into three groups: successful/skilled readers, neutral and unsuccessful/less-skilled readers. In order to more obviously see the difference only two extreme groups which are successful and unsuccessful readers were used. This research determined the state of reading strategy use of the students as a whole and among learners with different reading proficiency together with their commonly and uncommonly used strategies. Moreover, the research discovered that there is a significant difference between the reading strategies used by the two groups among both 6 major strategies and 46 specific strategies and determined the correlation of these strategies with the reading scores of successful readers to propose strategies that are appropriate for the students to use and practiceBased on the actual state of the CIAUF students’ reading strategy use,the training method should be done through infiltration of classroom activities as the main training strategy.Teachers can choose appropriate training methods according to the types of strategies the students use,so as to make it more targeted and effective.Because the students already have a good foundation with the language, they only need to have a sufficient understanding about the strategies they use,and need appropriate classroom activities to improve their use of reading strategies and their reading proficiency.
