The General Senior High School Curriculum Standards English(2017 Edition)condenses the core competency of English subject,and clearly stipulates the content and cultivating requirements of cultural awareness.However,in pragmatical English teaching,many English teachers still consider vocabulary and grammar as the priority while the penetration of cultural awareness is ignored.Based on that,under the guidance of the General Senior High School Curriculum Standards English 2017 Edition and Intercultural Communication Theory,the author conducted an empirical study in Minhou NO.6 Secondary School in Fuzhou city.In the study,the survey method and experimental method are applied to collect data,and the SPSS 20.0 is employed to analyze these results and provide evidence for discussion.This study aims to explore the following two issues:1.What is the current situation of cultural awareness penetration in English reading teaching?2.Does the penetration of cultural awareness in English reading teaching help to improve students’ English reading ability?Through analysis and discussion,this study mainly draws the following conclusions.First,the current senior-one students are short of cultural awareness,but they understand that learning cultural knowledge and raising cultural awareness are beneficial to English learning.Second,for English teachers,the limited teaching time and the pressure from external examinations exert a negative impact on the penetration of cultural awareness,the materials that contain cultural knowledge in the 2019 senior English textbooks(PEP)are not fully utilized as well.Third,the post-test results of the experimental group and the control group are significantly different in the independent samples t-test analysis,indicating that through penetrating the cultural background knowledge and comparing Chinese and Western culture,the approaches that the author adopted in the experimental group are conducive to raising students’ cultural awareness.Based upon the above conclusions,the author proposed corresponding teaching suggestions on penetrating cultural awareness in English reading teaching.This study boasts positive effect and indispensable practical value in solving the current problems existing in the senior high school English reading teaching and achieving the development of students’ cultural awareness.
