Cognitive failure is a phenomenon in which an individual could have done normally in life, but was unable to complete a cognitive task due to cognitive interference.Studies have found that cognitive failure can has adverse effects on college students’ learning and life and even physical and mental health, such as academic burnout,Internet addiction, and interpersonal discomfort. In recent years, most of the research on cognitive failure has been conducted by foreign scholars, but there are relatively few domestic studies, and the research topic is relatively single,so it is necessary to study the development mechanism of cognitive failure.Based on the theory of resource limitation, this study explores the developmental mechanisms with stress perception and negative emotions as negative factors, and then explores the protective models with trait mindfulness as positive factors. In addition, this study combines an individual-centered perspective to explore the potential types of cognitive failure and analyze the demographic characteristics of different types to provide a reference for understanding cognitive failure in various aspects. In this study,840 college students in Fujian Province were studied, and the Stress Perception Questionnaire(Perceived Stress Scale,PSS),Positive and Negative Affect Questionnaire(The Positive and Negative Affect Scale,PNAS),Positive Attention Awareness Scale(Mindful Attention Awareness Scale,MAAS),and Cognitive Failure Questionnaire(Cognitive Failures Questionnaire,CFQ)were used to,and SPSS25.0 and Mplus8.3 were used to analyze the data.(1)College students’ stress perceptions differed significantly by gender and place of origin, negative emotions differed significantly by gender and major, trait mindfulness differed significantly by gender and grade, and cognitive failure differed significantly on all demographic variables except major.(2)College Students’ cognitive failure can be divided into three potential categories: low failure group, medium failure group and high failure group, and there were significant differences in demographic variables between cognitive failure types.(3)There was a significant positive correlation among stress perception, negative emotion and cognitive failure, and cognitive failure was significantly positively predicted by stress perception and negative emotion, and negative emotion partially mediated the relationship between stress perception and cognitive failure.(4)Trait mindfulness significantly moderated the direct pathway from stress perception to cognitive failure and the second half of the pathway from negative emotions to cognitive failure in the mediator model. In summary,College Students’ stress perception significantly positively predicts cognitive failure, negative emotion plays a mediating role, and trait mindfulness can effectively moderate this mediating model. In addition, cognitive failure has different potential categories and obvious demographic differences.
