There are a large number of long and short adjectives with similar meanings in modern Chinese, and these long and short adjectives have significant differences in syntactic functions.Based on previous studies, this paper investigates the adaptability of single and double-syllable adjectives when they serve different syntactic functions.Through data comparison and detailed description,it is found that both long and short adjectives have predicative properties when they serve as attributives and predicates.Short adjectives have weak predicative properties and have certain restrictions on syntactic functions, while long adjectives have strong predicative properties and have more freedom in syntactic functions.Long and short adjectives have secondary predicative properties when used as adverbials and complements, they are dependent on verbs in syntax, and have a relatively independent predicate structure. The sub-predicate of short adjectives is weak, while the sub-predicate of long adjectives is strong.Long and short adjectives have consistent differences in describing the central word.In terms of syntactic function, long adjectives are freer than short adjectives, while short adjectives can enhance their predication function by adding degree adverbs.By comparing the differences between long and short adjectives in different syntactic functions,it can be found that there are differences between long and short adjectives in terms of part-of-speech intermediary, degree, independence of meaning and prosody, and these differences are consistent. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly introduces the reasons for choosing the topic, the research status, research significance, research methods and corpus sources.By reviewing previous studies,we found that most of the analysis of long and short adjectives in modern Chinese is still lacking, and comparative studies on long and short adjectives are relatively few,and they lack comprehensive and detailed descriptions, and their practical value is low.List and compare aspects. Therefore, the comparative study of long and short adjectives needs to be further refined and scientific in order to describe their differences and commonalities more comprehensively and in detail. The second chapter examines the definition and selection range of long and short adjectives, pointing out that the main basis for word selection comes from the Modern Chinese Dictionary(Seventh Edition),and grasps the characteristics of "homotypes" and "synonyms" to screen out adjectives that meet the requirements. At the same time, the difference between the predicate and the secondary predicate of adjectives is generally expounded, and long and short adjectives have predicate when acting as determiners and predicates, and secondary predicates when acting as adverbs and complements. The third chapter and the fourth chapter mainly compare the syntactic functions of long and short adjectives when they are determiners, predicates, adverbs and complements, and analyze the distribution differences of long and short adjectives. When short adjectives act as syntactic components, they have poor predicate and long adjectives have strong predicate characteristics.Adjectives that act as different syntactic components are classified according to criteria such as intrinsic and extrinsic. The fifth chapter investigates the predicative difference and commonality of long and short adjectives, and obtains the differences and performance characteristics of long and short adjectives with homonyms in modern Chinese when they serve as different syntactic components. At the same time,it is pointed out that short adjectives can enhance their predicativeness by adding degree adverbs, negative adverbs and parallel forms,so as to achieve the balance of predicative functions. At the same time,it makes a specific and detailed analysis of long and short adjectives, the difference in degree, the intermediary of adjectives, the independence of meaning items and the reasons of rhythm, which lead to the differences between long and short adjectives in different syntactic functions. The sixth chapter is the concluding part of this article, which summarizes the previous viewpoints, points out the deficiencies in the research, and looks forward to the future.
