A Report On The E-C Translation Of Long Sentences Of Climate Change And Small Island States:Power,Knowledge,and The South Pacific (Excerpt) By Dynamic Equivalence Theory

Recently,climate change poses a great danger to Pacific island countries(such as sea-level rise),which is harmful to people’s health.Therefore,these countries need to take some measures to improve this phenomenon.Climate Change and Small Island States: Power,Knowledge,and the South Pacific is an academic book on climate change in Pacific island countries,which is also an informative text expressing views of the author,describing the impacts of climate change on small island states and the measures they are taking to address it in detail.It is of great practical value to translate texts about climate change on Pacific islands.This text is characterized by strong logic,and accurate,coherent and natural language,which involves many long sentences with complex structures.Due to the large differences between English and Chinese,some problems are likely to arise in translation,such as westernization and unclear expressions,which cause difficulties in comprehension for readers.This translation report selects Chapter One and Two as examples and adopts Dynamic Equivalence Theory as a guide to explore translation strategies and methods for long sentences.According to the complexity of sentence structure,the author of this report divides long sentences into long simple sentences,long compound sentences and long complex sentences.In the process of translation,under the guidance of dynamic equivalence theory,the author of this report chooses a translation with coherent and natural language that is consistent with the expression habits of Chinese readers.In the translation of long simple sentences,the methods of “splitting-off”,“amplification” and “class shifts”are adopted.In the translation of long compound sentences,the methods of “combination”and “linear translation” are adopted.In the translation of long complex sentences,the methods of “embedding”,“reversion”,“voice shifts” and “synthesis” are adopted.This report provides an in-depth analysis of translation strategies and methods for long sentences,combining theory and practice to a certain extent to improve translation quality.It is hoped that it will be useful for further study of long sentences in informative texts in E-C translation.
