John Corigliano(b.1938)is one of the leading contemporary composers in the United States, having written more than a hundred musical works over half a century.Among a wide range of genres, themes, and forms in his music, one of Corigliano’s most accomplished types of composition belongs to his orchestral music. His eclectic compositional style and his insistence that music should serve a broad audience have made his works a treasure of contemporary musical culture in the United States. One Sweet Morning is Corigliano’s third work for voice and orchestra in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the“911 Attacks,”co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. The piece contains four cross-cultural poems, including 1)A Song on the End of the World,2)Patroclus,3)War South of the Great Wall, and 4)One Sweet Morning. This paper first analyzes the compositional structure, pitch organization, and orchestration characteristics of the four movements of One Sweet Morning. Then, this paper also studies the compositional techniques employed in this work,Eventually, the paper summarizes the composer’s creative thinking and compositional techniques in combining poetry and music. The whole paper is divided into three parts:Introduction,Body, and Conclusion,of which the Body contains three chapters. The first chapter offers a brief introduction to Corigliano’s life, his compositional style,as well as the historical background, and the poems used in One Sweet Morning. The second chapter discusses the formal structure of the work, mostly focused on the structural framework of the poetic-musical correlations. The third chapter points out the pitch organization, summarizing the core intervals and tonality. The fourth chapter highlights the orchestration techniques, analyzing the use of new timbres created with traditional instrumentation, the use of multi-dimensional voices, and the orchestration of the“accidental element,”exploring the integration of orchestration techniques with poetic elements.
