A Report On Simulated E-C Simultaneous Interpreting Of High-Level Symposium On Water Of 2022 UNOC

This is a report on simulated English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting of the High-Level Symposium on Water of 2022 UNOC.The symposium aimed to explore strategies for coordinating water and ocean resources,fostering cross-sectoral collaboration,and achieving integrated governance to effectively address climate change,implement the 2030 Agenda,and accomplish the corresponding Sustainable Development Goals.The speech delivered in this study is characterized by its authenticity,formality,and informative nature,serving as the foundation for this report.The report introduces Gile’s Effort Model as a guiding theory.According to Gile,during simultaneous interpretation,the available processing capacity of an interpreter approaches saturation.Thus,the interpreter needs to effectively manage attentional resources,including listening and analysis,memory,and production,in order to ensure high-quality interpretation.This model comprehensively elucidates the triggers that contribute to increased demand for attentional resources and assists the author in analyzing the causes of errors,omissions,or infelicities.Consequently,it facilitates the adjustment of coping tactics and the improvement of interpretation quality.The structure of the report consists of several chapters.The first chapter provides an overview of the symposium’s background,its content,and the main focus of the research.The second chapter describes the task process employed in the simulated interpretation.The third chapter presents a comprehensive overview of Gile’s Effort Model.The fourth chapter explores the specific causes of errors through illustrative examples and proposes corresponding coping tactics.Finally,the fifth chapter summarizes the primary findings,identifies shortcomings,and provides suggestions for future practice.The major findings of this report are as follows: to alleviate the burden of listening and analysis,the use of fuzzy interpreting,parrot interpreting,and extending the ear-voice span is recommended.For speeches with a high rate of delivery and a dense information density,segmentation,generalization,and omission techniques are proposed.Additionally,the inherent differences between English and Chinese,as well as the necessity of maintaining smooth information flow,pose challenges during the production phase.These challenges can be addressed through the application of techniques such as addition,repetition,conversion,and explanation.
