The Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In Wolf Totem From The Perspective Of Bourdieu’s Field Theory

The theoretical framework of this thesis is comprised of field theory and two major factors(intratextual parameter and supratextual parameter)that influence the strategic selection of culture-loaded words.Under the guidance of this framework,the thesis combines quantitative,descriptive,and qualitative analyses to investigate Goldblatt’s translation strategies and the factors behind his choice.The quantitative analysis is used to calculate the statistical data and infer Goldblatt’s translation strategy tendency,while the descriptive and qualitative analyses are used to explore the field,habitus,capital,and micro-texts in order to trace the intratextual and supratextual parameters that influence his translation decisions.It is found that Goldblatt mainly used the following methods in translating culture-loaded words: literal translation,transliteration,extratextual gloss,intratextual gloss,limited universalization,absolute universalization,naturalization,deletion,naturalization plus extratextual gloss,and naturalization plus intratextual gloss.In Goldblatt’s translation,there is a preference for cultural conversion(79%)but also a combination of cultural substitution(21%).Intratextual parameters may include the significance and degree of vacancy of culture-loaded words in the source text,while supratextual parameters may include the shifting position of Chinese literature within the Western literary field,the symbolic capital of Jiang Rong’s Wolf Totem,the vast capital accumulated by Goldblatt,the resulting dominance,and the translator’s habitus(favoring cultural conversion).
