Guangdong province,a most inclusive and open one across the country, has seen a growing number of crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants, who are engaged in drug trafficking, smuggling and illegal business operations, among others, these years. To probe into these cases, the police station, the people’s procuratorate, and the people’s court are in great demand for interpreters whose help is essential in communicating with different parties.Under the guidance of Ervin Goffman’s Participation Theory, this report will analyse the changing roles of an interpreter in legal settings on the basis of author’s own court interpreting experiencesThis report focuses on three of these practice experiences. The main body consists of five chapters. In the beginning, the first part briefly introduces the entrusting parties, the author herself and the three tasks that the author has received. Also, the types, features and requirements of court interpreting are included. In the second part, the author gives a detailed description of the general process of the tasks, including pre-task preparation,on-site interpreting and post-task assessment; The third chapter gives a brief introduction to Goffman’s Participation Framework, which provides the theoretical basis for the report. In the fourth part, the author analyses the difficulties she encountered and reflects on the mistakes she made in real scenarios before coming up with possible solutions. The last part concludes the whole report, consisting of major findings, implications and limitations.Upon completion of this report, the author hopes to provide more experience for her own future practice,as well as give real-case examples to other interpreters for future references.
