Projection display technology based on space light modulator has many advantages such as high brightness, high resolution, and is going digital. This makes it a very attractive market trend. With the establishment of digital TV and high-definition TV's standard, also the development of DMD and LCoS, projection display technology has wide potential use. The optical engine of projection display system-main part of the whole system will have heavy effects on final performances. So it is key to design the optical engine.This dissertation did research on large screen projection display. Works were mainly about design of illumination system and model emulation of optical engine. Improvements on whole system were made by computer emulation and optimized design.Etendue value is an important definition in non-imaging optics. It was used to illustrate luminous flux and optical efficiency. At last, relation between optical efficiency and Etendue value is analyze. ZEMAX and LightTools are used in the design of fly-eye lens array illumination system, which has many advantages including compact volume, high efficiency and uniformity. Now it has been applied in commercial 0.9 inch TFT-LCD panel projector. Integrator rod illumination system designed with tilted lens elements was used to DMD illumination. Changes of Etendue value before and after light went through the illumination system was analyzed and it would direct the design of system parameters.Based on the prototype of standard ellipse integrator rod illuminator, half elliptical, elliptical hyperbolic, dual-parabolic and dual-axis dual-parabolic reflector were designed. The Emulations displayed high Etendue efficiency and proved that the four designs have potential values in 0.5-0.7 inch SLM project display.Dividing colors and recombining colors system with dichroic filter system fulfilled the analysis of color balance by LightTool. The structure, coating, energy efficiency, Etendue of SCR color wheel system was analyzed and improvementstoward them were made. By theory of anti-telephoto and wide field optical system's illuminance distribution, projection lens was devised to fulfill the demand of optical engine.Emulation, modeling and evaluation of optical engine were realized and three types of it were given out including whole system modeling and capability. The computer emulation of TFT-LCD project display system was accordant with experimental data and whole system met user's demands. During the accomplishment of optical engine design of LCoS and DMD, its theory and key technologies were mastered.
