Drilling fluid management is a new concept presented recently, which includes drilling fluid design and its hydraulic performance design, such as pressure control, volume adjustment, cleaning of borehole and circulating simulation of drilling fluid. The measure of drilling fluid management is to optimize and to simplify the drilling fluid system, through which the aims to improve the drilling fluid efficiency, to reduce the drilling fluid cost are realized. Drilling fluid design is complicated and systemic, for which interdisciplinary theory and knowledge must be integrated; meanwhile the practice and experience are very important. The paper studied the drilling fluid system and the intellectualized design method, according to rule-based and case-based reasoning the drilling fluid system is designed. This paper investigated the latest rheology results of drilling fluid; integrating the modern mathematic technology the hydraulic parameter system is developed. The main achievements can be described as follows: 1. This paper studied the properties of geological exploration and the technologies of drilling fluids, referenced the latest research results of drilling fluid design system worldwide, researched the rules to design drilling fluid, and built the design rule base for drilling fluid design. 2. This paper summed up the technologies applied in the geological exploration and typical formulas used in the oil fields in China, with which the case base for drilling fluid design was built. 3. According to the engineering application of artificial intelligence, combined the above rule base and case base, the drilling fluid design system of rule-based and case-based reasoning was built. 4. This paper presented the latest research result of drilling fluid rheology and hydraulics, using regression analytical method; the drilling fluid hydraulic optimization system was build. 5. This paper built the drilling fluid design system including both drilling fluid system and drilling fluid hydraulics, which considered firstly the geological exploration conditions.
