Part one in This paper relates to a novel process for producing an excellent impact resistant graft copolymer which can be used in itself alone or in the form of a mixture with a thermoplastic resin. An impact resistant modifier can be obtained by polymerizing a mixture of monomers such as a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrle in presence of a rubber ( PB or SBR ) latex producing by emulsion polymerization. It is widely recognized that ,in such cases, the particle diameter of rubber (PB latex or SBR latex) greatly governs the impact resistance and processability of the final products. And it is well known fact that a larger particle diameter of rubber gives more improved impact resistance and processability. Accordingly, as the rubber component used impact resistant resin such as ABS resin, those having a larger particle diameter are preferred. However the dispersed rubber particles in producing by usual emulsion polymerization process have so small particle diameter as 0.04-0.15m,, high impact resistance can not be achieved with such a small particle diameter. Therefore, The technology for preparing rubber particle having a large particle diameter is very important for producing an impact resistant resin modifier. This paper is about the technology of preparing large rubber particle by agglomeration method .The process of preparing larger particle diameter rubber latex can be classified into two groups. One is the traditional process of achieving the enlargement of rubber particle in the course of polymerization of rubber latex, and the other is the process of agglomerating a rubber latex having small particle size by agglomerating agent (butylacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer). This paper adopt that agglomerated PB or SBR enlarged particles (the desired large particle 300nm ) are used as the substrate for the graft copolymer (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene graft copolymer) which is used as impact resistant modifier.
