ABS resin is a kind of thermoplastic engineering pastic with a broad use. With the fast development of transportation and household appliance market, the demand of ABS resin increases dramatically. The high performance and high function are the main direction of ABS resin, in which improving the impact resisitance of ABS resin is an important modification direction. This paper focuses on enlarging particle size of polybutadiene latex (PBL) to obtain ABS resin with high impact. We primarily introduced two methods of preparing PBL with large particle size:seed emulsion polymerization with surfactant and polymer agglomeration. Based on the small lab study, the scale up test for the synthesis of ABS resin was accomplished. The properties of ABS resin were tested to compare the effect of the above two approaches. In this paper, the cationic surfactant was the first time to be applied in the seed emulsion polymerization. We treated the seed with octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (1831), and then we got polybutadiene latex with large particle size through the seed emulsion polymerization. Many factors that influenced the particle size of polybutadiene latex for ABS resin were studied, including the adding methods and the amount of emulsifiers, the dosage of seed, the dosage of electrolyte and the dosage of1831. From our research we got the best conditions of preparing polybutadiene latex with large particle size. The properties of ABS resin were characterized by laser particle size analyzer, FTIR, DSC, SEM, tensile machines and etc. By using this latex as the substrate, an ABS resin was obtained having the following properties, notched impact strength was96J/m, bending strength was40.4MPa, heat distortion temperature was73.3℃, melt flow index was1.97g/10min.The process of preparing polybutadiene latex with large particle size by the method of polymer agglomeration was studied. Many factors that influenced the size of polybutadiene latex particle were studied, including the amount of agglomerative agents and emulsifiers, agglomerating time, agglomerating temperature and agitation speed. The ABS resin prepared on the scaling-up reactor had following properties, notched impact strength was177J/m, bending strength was60.4MPa, heat distortion temperature was72.3℃, melt flow index was2.34g/10min. From our research we could get the following results, the effect of regulating particle size of PBL through seed emulsion polymerization before which we treated the seed with cationic surfactant was not significant compared with the method of polymer agglomeration. The properties of the ABS resin prepared by using the method of polymer agglomeration were better than the former.
