In order to keep the social economy to develop sustainablly, it is very important that the water environment quality is analyzed, evaluated and predicted rationally, and it is therefore planned, harnessed and managed efficiently. To conduct the water environment analysis and prediction, an important basic work is to analyze and predict the hydrodynamic behaviors and water pollution situations of the water body with hydrodynamics and water quality models. The objective of this research is to study the hydrodynamic behavior and pollution situation in coastal areas with 3D hydrodynamics and water quality models, and to visualize the modeling results and display them in a clear and direct way.With the method of structurization program design, by means of Microsoft Developer Studio, the programs of 3D hydrodynamics model and water quality model, which were designed to run on work station under lower version, are successfully transplanted and upgraded, and now can be used on microcomputers conveniently. The applications of the upgraded programs of 3D hydrodynamics model and water quality model in Dalian Bay show that the time needed to run these two programs on microcomputer for a period of one year is only 5 minutes and 20 minutes respectively, but before upgraded it was 44 hours for the same work with the program of 3D hydrodynamics model and no final results were obtained with the program of 3D water quality model on microcomputer.The simulation of the hydrodynamics in Dalian Bay is conducted with the upgraded program of 3D hydrodynamics model. The hydrodynamic characteristics in Dalian Bay are obtained.The simulation of the water quality in Dalian Bay is conducted with the upgraded program of 3D water quality model. The concentration distributions of main pollutants are obtained. The present status of water quality in Dalian Bay is analyzed. A preliminary plan of total amounts control for main pollutants is put forward.The visualization of the 3D simulation results of hydrodynamics and water quality is studied with MATLAB. A practical procedure and the methods for visualization of thesimulation results with MATLAB are given. The 2D and 3D figures of the tide movement velocities of sea water, water levels, salt concentration distributions, temperature changes of sea water, and the concentration changes of main pollutants with tune and space in Dalian Bay are obtained. These figures display the hydrodynamics and water quality very clearly and directly. A practical technique to visualize the 3D simulation results of hydrodynamics and water quality based on MATLAB is proposed.Based on Geographic Information System (GIS), using the functions of MapInfo in data integration, space analysis and visualization, the developing and merging, creating points connection, creating relation data bank and integrated drawing, the concentration contours of pollutants and other related information based Dalian map and 3D simulation results of water quality in Dalian Bay are obtained. These figures show the concentration distributions of pollutants very clearly and directly, and can be used as basic information for environment management and planning. A simple technique to visualize the 3D simulation results of hydrodynamics and water quality is proposed.
