Urban ecological system is a huge, complex, multiple-variant, dynamic and open system, which brings various complicated problems seriously restricting the sustainable development of urban ecological system. As a macroscopic control planning to urban environment problems, urban ecological planning leads to a new phase for urban planning development, which is of great significance to the sustainable development of the hybrid system between urban ecological, social and economic systems. However, more problems could not be solved due to the shortcoming of the planning itself and planning methods. Out of this reason, in this research complexity-relevant theories were introduced in the urban ecological planning and two concept of "complexity of planning" and "complexity in planning" were proposed .For the "complexity of planning" which is researched not so widely, the uncertainty method was introduced and "flexible planning was proposed to make the goal and the concept of urban ecological planning uncertain.Special researches on five aspects of urban ecological planning were discussed. (l)The research of "flexible" index system and ecological function sectorization for urban ecology based on complexity theory and uncertainty methods; (2) The research of urban greenbelt system based on ecological complexity theory; (3) The research of urban resource and systematically and harmoniously controlling model system of environment based on self-organization theory; (4) The application research of urban population development planning based on fuzzy CA model; (5) The research of planning on treated sewage recycling in ecological district based on multiple-object grey decision-making method.(1) To the complexity of planning,the uncertainty theory was introduced into urban ecological function sectorization, one core part in urban ecological planning. The flexible planning was also proposed based on the urban ecological function sectorization. The uncertainty of urban indicator system was abated so that the relevant uncertainty character, the index system can be flexibly handled. Red-earth foothill in Changsha was taken as case study to reduce the uncertainty and improve the operability for urban indicator system.(2) The balance mechanism for urban ecological system will be of complex change in space after influenced by outside factors, while the present research only focused on the vertical ,natural process of urban ecological system, but not on the horizontal process.
