China is one of the countries with abundant bamboo resources. The processing and utilization of bamboo has being developed into one of the four promising industries in Chinese forest. Cutting plays an important part in the processing and utilization of bamboo. The quality of cutting is directly related with power consumption, processing cost, ratio of utilization of bamboo and the quality of finished products. This thesis studied the influence of the physical characteristics of bamboo and the cutting parameters on cutting forces and qualities synthetically applying technic and theories of signal processing, cutting principle and tool, high speed video record, micro-measurement and microphotographics, structure and physical and mechanical characteristics, with moso bamboo(Phyllostachys pubesens Mazel ex H. de Leh)as the object. The study is based on both theory and experiment. The aims are to build the mathematical models and influencing orderliness for the influence of physical characteristics and cutting parameters of bamboo on cutting forces and quality for saving power resource, reducing cost and improving the quality of final products. Following main conclusions are obtained:1. The influencing orderliness of the density and moisture content of bamboo on cutting forces are found and the mathematical models are built. The parallel cutting force is positively related with the density of bamboo. The force increases with the increase of moisture content of bamboo before the saturated moisture content and decreases tardily after that. The cutting forces for end-grain section cutting, longitudinal cutting and transverse cutting are obvious different.2. The phenomena and mechanism of desquamate are defined for the first time. Pit falling on the cutting surface occurs for longitudinal cutting and groove flaking arises for transverse cutting. Three kinds of flaking are formed according to the spreading direction and position of the crack Three groove forms are named for the first time.3. The cutting qualities for longitudinal and transverse cuttings are contrasted asbamboo has remarkable anisotropy. The surface for transverse cutting is much rougher than that for longitudinal cutting due to that the groove flaking brings more serious breakage to the cutting surface than the pit falling.4. The influencing orderliness of the density and moisture content of bamboo on cutting qualities are found and the mathematical models are built. The cutting qualities include both surface roughness and the chip modality owing to different final products. The qualities of the cutting surface and the chip modality are analyzed from both qualitative and quantificational points of view with the density and moisture content as variable respectively. It is found that the cutting qualities are improved with the increase of the density of bamboo. The desquamate disappears with the increase of the moisture content but spiny hair appears on the surface if the moisture content is too high. The chip modality is perfect for high moisture content.6. The influencing orderliness of the cutting depth and the rake angle of the tool on cutting qualities are found and the mathematical models are built. It is found that a large cutting depth provides a convenient condition for leading splitting and desquamate which causes a bad surface roughness. Both large and small rake angle can produce preferable surface, but the chip would badly bend if it is too small.
