China is one of the countries with abundant bamboo resources. Cutting plays an important part in the processing and utilization of bamboo. Because bamboo is different from wood in structure and properties, bamboo has its own characteristics. In order to guarantee the quality of bamboo products, the cutting parameters applied should not be the same with those for wood. The study is based on both theory and experiment. The aim is to build the mathematical models and influence orderliness for the influence of physical characteristics of and cutting parameters for bamboo on cutting quality for saving power resource, reducing cost and improving the quality of final products.This experiment, synthetically applying technic and theories of high speed video camera, micro-measurement and microphotographics, with moso bamboo(Phyllostachys pubesens Mazel e Leh) as the object, studied the quality of cutting surface and that of chip. When the surface quality is examined, the cutting surfaces under different conditions are recorded in pictures to be macroscopically analyzed, and the surface roughness is checked for quantificational analysis. When the chip quality is examined, the cutting process is recorded wigh CCD high speed video and replayed for macroscopical analysis, and the chips are observed under 2 Axis Non-Contact Measurement System to analyze their leading splitting and longitudinal crack. The chip's curvature are measure with the system for quantificational analysis.Following main conclusions are obtained:1. The cutting qualities for longitudinal and transverse cuttings are contrasted as bamboo has remarkable anisotropy. The surface for transverse cutting is much rougher than that for longitudinal cutting due to that the groove flaking from transverse cuttings brings more serious breakage to the cutting surface than the pit falling from longitudinal cutting.2. The influencing orderliness of the density and moisture content of bamboo on cutting qualities are found and the mathematical models are built.
