The current study is a special topic of a general project "Green GDP Accounting of Forest Resources of China". The special study is "Green GDP accounting of sandy desertification losses in Northern China" outlined under the general project. It is still at its initial stage of the studies on the Green GDP accounting of losses of sandy desertification in the world. This initiation is an all-aspect issue on the subject, including criteria, calculating methods, market pricing, temporal and spatial allocation of the losses etc. There have been few successful experiences and theories that can be used for the work. Moreover, the lack of the relevant data and the available data are not systematic. For example, precise biomass, CO2 sequestration and O2 releasing amounts, social benefits of desert vegetation are yet not available, comparison with data on forests. Especially the data for ecological benefits that is usually considerable in relative amount for the accounting. Because of this situation, and that the Green GDP accounting will be a base of decision-making, in the current study, the Green GDP accounting of sandy desertification v/ill be just take the widely accepted data and some important criteria. By this principle, this study will mainly focus on the green GDP accounting of some important direct and indirect losses of sandy desertification. Most of the data used in the calculation in the current study are issued by State Forestry Administration in 2005, by third survey and monitoring of desertification of China. And in the case that there are no detailed data on the required information, the published data are used instead. The sandy desertification of northern China is classified into two types according to current status, tendency and form of economic losses. They are present areas of sandy desertified lands and annually added areas. The current sandy desertified lands are divided into slight, medium and serious degraded lands based on the developmental stages of the desertification. Market valuation approach was used for the estimation of direct financial losses. The financial losses are 25%, 50% and...
