Physical and chemical characteristics and cytotoxicity of indoor PM10 of Hutou village, the high incidence area of Xuanwei lung cancer, were investigated by using the knowledge of envi-ronmental geoscience, toxicology, molecular biology, plasmid DNA scission assay, And alveolar epithelial cells model were applied which simulate the process of invo exposure and physical and chemistry methods. Coal fly ashes, soot aggregates, minerals and unresolved particles were identi-fied by high resolution Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, the number percentages and the number-size and volume-size distributions of these particles were analysed synchronously. Coal fly ash has the largest contribution to the number of indoor PM10. ICP-MS analysis indicated that the concentrations of the trace elements in Hutou village PM10s are significantly higher than the control point. Toxicology results show that the damage rate of plasmid DNA is obviously higher than that of the control point. Flow cytometry suggested that the apoptosis rate rise with the con-centration of PM10, at the same concentration,PM10 from Hutou village has greater impact on cell apoptosis rate than that from Ningjiawan village.
